MBSA Concussion Protocol

Purpose
The purpose of this protocol is to ensure the safety and well-being of all MBSA participants by providing clear guidelines for identifying, responding to, and managing suspected concussions during practices or games.
When to Use This Protocol
This protocol applies any time a player experiences a blow to the head, or a forceful impact to the body that may result in a head or neck injury, regardless of how mild it seems at the time.
Step-by-Step Procedure for Managers/Coaches
1. Stop Play Immediately
Remove the player from the field immediately.
Ensure the player is in a safe, quiet area away from the action.
2. Perform an Initial Check
Check for the following signs and symptoms of a possible concussion:
Observed by Coach or Others:
Confusion or disorientation
Clumsy movement or imbalance
Slurred speech
Blank or dazed facial expression
Slow to answer questions
Loss of consciousness (even briefly)
Forgets instructions or assignments
Vomiting or seizure
Reported by Player:
Headache or pressure in head
Nausea or dizziness
Blurry or double vision
Sensitivity to light or noise
Feeling sluggish or groggy
Trouble concentrating or remembering
Feeling “not right”
3. If Any Symptoms Are Present – Treat as a Suspected Concussion
If even one symptom is present, do the following:
Remove the player from play – no exceptions.
Notify the child’s parent or guardian immediately.

A player who has been removed for a suspected concussion may not return to practice or games until:
They are cleared in writing by a licensed healthcare professional
A copy of this clearance is submitted to the MBSA Executive Board
Important Notes for Coaches/Managers
When in doubt, sit them out.
Players recovering from a concussion are at greater risk for serious injury if they return too soon.
Never pressure a child to “tough it out” or return to play while showing symptoms.
Ensure all assistant coaches and team parents are aware of this policy.
