MBSA Concussion Protocol

Effective Date:  01/01/2025
Approved By: MBSA Board

Purpose

The purpose of this protocol is to ensure the safety and well-being of all MBSA participants by providing clear guidelines for identifying, responding to, and managing suspected concussions during practices or games.

When to Use This Protocol

This protocol applies any time a player experiences a blow to the head, or a forceful impact to the body that may result in a head or neck injury, regardless of how mild it seems at the time.

Step-by-Step Procedure for Managers/Coaches

1. Stop Play Immediately

  • Remove the player from the field immediately.

  • Ensure the player is in a safe, quiet area away from the action.

2. Perform an Initial Check

Check for the following signs and symptoms of a possible concussion:

Observed by Coach or Others:

  • Confusion or disorientation

  • Clumsy movement or imbalance

  • Slurred speech

  • Blank or dazed facial expression

  • Slow to answer questions

  • Loss of consciousness (even briefly)

  • Forgets instructions or assignments

  • Vomiting or seizure

Reported by Player:

  • Headache or pressure in head

  • Nausea or dizziness

  • Blurry or double vision

  • Sensitivity to light or noise

  • Feeling sluggish or groggy

  • Trouble concentrating or remembering

  • Feeling “not right”

3. If Any Symptoms Are Present – Treat as a Suspected Concussion

If even one symptom is present, do the following:

✅ Remove the player from play – no exceptions.

  • Do not allow return to play on the same day, even if symptoms subside.

✅ Notify the child’s parent or guardian immediately.

  • Explain what happened and what symptoms were observed.

  • Recommend the child be evaluated by a licensed healthcare professional.

4. Document the Incident

Managers must:

  • Complete an MBSA Incident Report Form within 24 hours

  • Submit the report to the MBSA Website or Division Coordinator

  • Include:

    • Date, time, and location of incident

    • Description of how the injury occurred

    • Symptoms observed or reported

    • Actions taken (e.g., removed from game, parent notified)

5. Medical Clearance Required for Return to Play

A player who has been removed for a suspected concussion may not return to practice or games until:

✅ They are cleared in writing by a licensed healthcare professional
✅ A copy of this clearance is submitted to the MBSA Executive Board

Important Notes for Coaches/Managers

  • When in doubt, sit them out.

  • Players recovering from a concussion are at greater risk for serious injury if they return too soon.

  • Never pressure a child to “tough it out” or return to play while showing symptoms.

  • Ensure all assistant coaches and team parents are aware of this policy.
